Gophers men’s hockey to celebrate NCAA record at Mariucci on Friday – TwinCities.com-Pioneer Press

The Minnesota Gophers men’s hockey team will celebrate its NCAA-record sixth straight regular-season conference championship and its fourth consecutive Big Ten Conference title before Friday’s home opener against Penn State.

Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Mariucci Arena. The banner will be revealed at 6:45 p.m.

The Gophers have compiled a league-best 54-19-7 record since the Big Ten’s inaugural season in 2013-14. Minnesota has won the regular-season league title every year in that span, plus Western Collegiate Hockey Association titles in 2012 and 2013, the latter shared with St. Cloud State.

The Gophers were selected as the favorites to repeat as Big Ten champions in the 2017-18 Big Ten preseason coaches’ poll.

Junior goaltender Eric Shierhorn is expected to match a program-record 78 consecutive starts in net; he leads all active NCAA netminders in that category. He should tie John Lothrop’s school record, set from 1964-66.

Shierhorn stopped a career-high 59 shots the last time Minnesota played Penn State. The Nittany Lions won 4-3 in double overtime to advance to the Big Ten tournament final after the longest game in league history last March.
