Iowa Football: Graduate transfer WR Matt Quarells officially joins program – Landof10.com

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Wide receiver Matt Quarells is officially a part of the Iowa football team. The Iowa sports information department confirmed the news on Saturday.

Quarells is a graduate transfer from New Mexico and is expected to add depth and compete for a significant role in the passing game. His stats don’t jump out from a run-heavy offense at New Mexico. Quarells had 11 receptions for 180 yards and 1 touchdown, but is expected to bring a vertical threat and speed option to the wide receiver room that the Hawkeyes lacked last season.

News of Quarells transferring surfaced in late July. A holdup with his transfer kept Quarells from joining the Hawkeyes for the start of camp. Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz described it as “red tape” at the team’s media day on Aug. 5.

Now, Quarells is in camp. He showed up on the team’s roster on Friday. He also showed up in the practice photos the team posted to its website on Friday.

Quarells finally arrives nearly two weeks into camp. He will need to make a good impression quickly if he is to climb onto the depth chart in time for the season opener against Wyoming on Sept. 2.
