Venus Williams has won $5.47 million this year in prize money on the tour, the most among any woman athlete in any sport, and she is ranked No. 5 in the world by the Women’s Tennis Association.

And, oh yeah… she hasn’t won a single tournament in 2017.

Such is the chaotic condition of the women’s tour since Venus’s younger sister, Serena Williams, had the audacity to take some time off to start a family. Without Serena, it seems, every pro who ever swung a tennis racket in earnest gets a fat check along with her participation trophy.

Sure, that’s an exaggeration, but consider:

The four major tournaments in 2017 were won by four different players. Of the four top-ranked women, three players – Simona Halep, Caroline Wozniacki and Karolina Pliskova – have never won a Grand Slam event in their careers. Nobody has demonstrated a modicum of consistency on tour, other than Venus’

uncanny ability to go deep in tournaments, only  to lose them all.
