Wisconsin-Northern Iowa basketball score: Recap

FINAL — Wisconsin 69, Northern Iowa 38: Wisconsin looked quite good for lengthy stretches of the game and used a 20-2 run in the first half to pull away for an easy victory. Eight different Badgers players made a 3-pointer, which is an encouraging sign moving forward. That could help to open up the floor for forward Ethan Happ down low. Guard Kobe King scored a team-high 15 points off the bench, including 10 in the first half. He’ll be a major spark for this offense.

Wisconsin 64, Northern Iowa 30 (3:21, 2nd): Wisconsin’s reserves are in the game to earn a few minutes of playing time. Eight different Badgers have made a 3-pointer tonight, which could be a good sign moving forward. The more Wisconsin can stretch the floor, the harder it will be to try and defend preseason all-Big Ten pick Ethan Happ in the post. Wisconsin has a few solid offensive weapons, and Kobe King and Khalil Iverson have been solid.

Wisconsin 60, Northern Iowa 28 (6:41, 2nd): Wisconsin has wrapped up this game with a balanced performance. Kobe King leads the Badgers with 12 points, while Ethan Happ and Khalil Iverson have 9 apiece.

Wisconsin 51, Northern Iowa 26 (11:09, 2nd): The Badgers have thoroughly dominated the second half and are on a 16-1 run over the last 6:44. Northern Iowa has missed its last 7 field goal attempts. Wisconsin is showing that, despite so many new pieces in place, defense will remain a staple of this team. Seven different players have scored at least 4 points for the Badgers as well.

Wisconsin 45, Northern Iowa 25 (15:18, 2nd): Ethan Happ buries a 3-pointer and draws a standing ovation, albeit a mild one, at the Kohl Center. Happ did not attempt a single 3 last season, and he has attempted two of them tonight. Could he be adding a new weapon to his arsenal? Happ has 9 points, 7 rebounds and 2 assists.

Wisconsin 35, Northern Iowa 18 (Halftime): D’Mitrik Trice hits a jumper off a screen to close a solid first half for the Badgers. Eight different Wisconsin players scored, and the Badgers made 14 of 25 shots from the field (56 percent). That’s certainly an encouraging start for a team trying to figure out how the rotation will look. Kobe King’s 10 points lead the way for Wisconsin.

Wisconsin 30, Northern Iowa 15 (2:32, 1st): Wisconsin has connected on 12 of 21 field goals and is beginning to pull away. Kobe King leads the Badgers with 10 points, Khalil Iverson has 6 and Ethan Happ 4. Iverson has made both of his 3-point attempts, which is a significant step forward and will greatly benefit this team.

Wisconsin 22, Northern 12 (5:42, 1st): Wisconsin’s offense is heating up behind the strength of Kobe King’s jump shot. He has scored 10 points off the bench and is 4 of 4 from the field. Brad Davison also has provided a spark off the bench playing point guard for D’Mitrik Trice. Davison has a steal, an assist and a 3-pointer. Expect to see plenty of those two players during the season. Wisconsin is now on a 20-2 run.

Wisconsin 11, Northern Iowa 10 (11:33, 1st): The Badgers take their first lead on Ethan Happ’s bucket inside. It seems as though Wisconsin’s backcourt will be a strength of this team throughout the season, but the Badgers need more from their frontcourt rotation outside of Happ.

Northern Iowa 10, Wisconsin 9 (11:48, 1st): A much better stretch for the Badgers, who got two buckets from guard Kobe King and one from point guard D’Mitrik Trice. King has a special ability to score. He buried a mid-range jumper while drawing a foul and later drilled a difficult turnaround jumper from the left baseline. Wisconsin has been unable to stop guard Juwan McCloud, who has all 10 of the Panthers’ points.

Northern Iowa 4, Wisconsin 2 (15:33 1st): This is the first exhibition game of a long season, and the Badgers look like it here at the start. Forward Ethan Happ has Wisconsin’s only bucket on a nice left-handed layup inside. He also was called for an illegal screen. Andy Van Vliet has missed his first two attempts from the field.

Wisconsin-Northern Iowa basketball preview

Wisconsin has finished in the top four of the Big Ten regular season in each of the last 16 seasons. But many pundits believe that streak would come to an end this season. In a preseason vote of 28 media members who cover the conferences, the Badgers were picked to finish seventh.

The Badgers’ team dynamic will change in 2017-18 now that Bronson Koenig, Nigel Hayes, Zak Showalter and Vitto Brown are gone. Those four stalwarts combined to play an astounding 547 college games with 349 starts. They accounted for 55.9 percent of the minutes played last season, 59.7 percent of the points, 41.5 percent of the rebounds and 54.6 percent of the assists. Hayes finished third in school history in scoring (1,857 points), and Koenig set the program’s career 3-point record (270).

Wisconsin’s only returning starter is forward Ethan Happ, who averaged 14.0 points and 9.0 rebounds last season and earned first-team All-Big Ten honors. Happ flourished as a redshirt sophomore, but he also had enough talent around him to take pressure of him needing to be the best player on the floor every game.

D’Mitrik Trice will assume the starting point guard role previously occupied by Koenig. Trice averaged 5.6 points per game last season, while forward Khalil Iverson averaged 3.9 points. No other returning player averaged more than 2.2 points per game. Included in that group are forward Charlie Thomas (2.2 points), Brevin Pritzl Pritzl (1.9), Andy Van Vliet (1.3) and Alex Illikainen (1.3).

Those four returning players, along with redshirt freshman Aleem Ford, will be vying for playing time. And each of them will have to demonstrate marked improvement to excel through the grind of a Big Ten campaign.

Given the lack of returning production, Wisconsin may require contributions from its three scholarship freshmen. Guards Brad Davison and Kobe King were the first two players off the bench during Wisconsin’s 74-66 scrimmage victory against Missouri. Nathan Reuvers, a 6-foot-10 center, can bang in the post and shoot from the perimeter, although he needs to add bulk.

In the Missouri scrimmage, Happ led Wisconsin with 17 points, while Davison contributed 14 points, Iverson 12 and Trice 11.
